Grazia Marin | Keepers of the Forest | 2009
Medium Used: Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 91.0 cm (H), 91.0 cm (W).
ARTIST’S STATEMENT: This work was part of a large solo exhibition featuring Greek Mythology. The painting includes nymphs and satyrs who were part of the ‘ecology’ and carers of the natural world, according to ancient Greeks. It shows some figures in human form and others as nebulous beings, never quite accessible to humans. I painted it in acrylic washes, in an abstracted style, so as to emphasise the mysteries of mythology.
I now consider myself an activist artist, interested in stimulating discussions about socio-politic issues. These include war, injustices and the experiences of women. Before focusing on activist art, I had a long-standing interest in myths and legends. Past exhibitions I held included themes of European fairytales and Christian myths. My body of work includes paintings, watercolours, collages, textiles, installations, and poems, songs and stories.
